Dutch-Asiatic Shipping (DAS) – Enriched Dataset

This dataset provides an enriched and normalized version of the Dutch-Asiatic Shipping (DAS) database, which records direct shipping traffic between the Netherlands and Asia from 1595 to 1795. The DAS database covers the voyages of the so-called Voorcompagnieën and subsequently those of the Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC), totalling 4,722 outbound and 3,359 homebound voyages. The starting point for this enriched dataset was a dump of the original DAS SQL database, provided by Rik Hoekstra (Huygens Institute) to Lodewijk Petram (Huygens Institute) on 16 January 2018. This dump consists of three CSV files (<code>original/onboard.csv</code>, <code>original/voyage.csv</code>, <code>original/yards.csv</code>). The enriched dataset restructures these into nine interlinked CSV files (<code>enriched/</code>) with stable entity identifiers, including for unique VOC ships, normalized dates, structured name fields, and external links to reference datasets.
