Characterization of hard X-ray selected binaries: a census of magnetic CVs

The INTEGRAL and SWIFT satellites detected a large number of galactic Xraysources above 20keV,among which virgul67% identified as accreting white dwarfbinaries. Among known systems most harbour asynchronously rotating magneticprimaries, suggesting that this formerly small subclass could be an importantcontributor to the galactic Xray binary populations. However, most newlydiscovered sources are proposed as magnetic cataclysmic variables throughoptical spectra. XMMNewton demonstrated unique potential to infer their truenature through the detection of Xray pulses and study of broadband spectra.
