Replication data for: Constitutional Design and Judicial Stability in Latin America, 1900-2009

We explore the constitutional powers, composition, appointment procedures, and terms in office of Supreme Courts and Constitutional Tribunal justices in 17 Latin American countries between 1900 and 2009. The analysis relies on an original database containing the text of all constitutional articles referring to the judiciary. Based on this information, we show to what extent the stability of Latin American justices in office can be explained by the institutions regulating the judicial system. Our analysis indicates that the survival of justices in office is determined by the stability of the institutional framework, more than by the specific content of formal rules.
