DATA ON UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS USES OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA

The social media seem to be blanking out the use of the traditional media by some young people. This data set examines what undergraduate students of Covenant University use the social media to do. The survey method was adopted in generating the primary data.. The copy of the questionnaire was administered to 2,798 respondents. The data indicate that these undergraduates primarily use the social media for four main reasons: personal communication, information search, entertainment, academic and non-academic purposes. They mostly use the social media for private messaging, socialization and sharing of ideas with their families, friends and colleagues. These respondents also claim that the greatest benefit the social media have conferred on them is the provision of platforms for free expression. They also use the social media to cross check some information that they have received. Most of the respondents spend between an hour or two every day on their social network platforms.
