Among the coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), Staphylococcus haemolyticus plays an important role in hospital-acquired opportunistic infections. S. haemolyticus is second only to S. epidermidis in its frequency of isolation from human blood cultures and it may also cause peritonitis, otitis, urinary tract infections, and septicaemia. In a recent study conducted at L.V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, eight out of 22 non-S. epidermidis CoNS were identified as S. haemolyticus. This shows the relevance of S. haemolyticus in ocuar infections. S. haemolyticus showed highest level of antimicrobial resistance including hetero-resistance to glycopeptides among all CoNS species.
