This dataset is the global 1:5,000,000 scale reservoir and dam dataset, dated to 2011. While many key environmental and social trade-offs associated with dams and reservoirs have been recognized, global datasets describing their characteristics and geographic distributions remain largely incomplete. To address this gap, the Global Water System Project (GWSP) launched an international initiative to curate existing dam and reservoir datasets, aiming to provide the scientific community with a single, georeferenced, reliable database: the Global Reservoir and Dam Database (Grand). The Global Reservoir and Dam Database aggregates reservoirs with a storage capacity exceeding 0.1 km³. This dataset contains spatially explicit records of 6,862 dams and 6,824 reservoirs, and provides information regarding their storage capacities.
