Thaumarchaeota diversity was determined using 16S rRNA and ammonia monooxygenase (amoA) genes from samples collected in the Southern Ocean in the Palmer LTER sampling region (http://pal.lternet.edu/). Samples were collected from the ARSV Laurence M. Gould in September 2010 (LMG 10-06, spring; LTER 600 line only) and January 2011 (LMG 11-01, summer; entire LTER grid). Specific goals for the project were comparing diversity between different water masses (Antarctic Surface Water, Winter Water, Circumpolar Deep Water) during spring and summer. This data was collected as part of a larger study, to be published as: "Significant Ammonia Oxidation Rates in Antarctic Waters Attributed to Thaumarchaeota" by Bradley B. Tolar, Meredith J. Ross, Natalie J. Wallsgrove, Qian Liu, Lihini I. Aluwihare, Brian N. Popp, and James T. Hollibaugh.
