Monetary and price development. The Lower Rhine Area in comparison with other European Regions: 1350 to 1800.

Abstract: The Study was part of a research project, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and titled „Monetary history of Central Europe in the late medieval and early modern period” (=Geld- und Währungsgeschichte Mitteleuropas im Spätmittelalter und der frühen Neuzeit). The project’s aim was the most complete reconstruction of the monetary conditions in Central Europe from 1300 to 1800. This task required not only the reappraising of money rates, currency coins, and account systems as complete as possible, but also a description and explanation of the structure of functional coin currency systems (Münzwährungssysteme). Therefore, in this study, an overview is given of data, the structure and development of monetary systems, which were linked with information on price history, whereby the basis of materials is mainly concentrated on the Lower Rhine area and on the Dutch area. The aim of the study is to present the monetary systems and it’s developments of the Lower Rhine Area for preferably long period in a quantitative way. The orientation on the price- and wage history necessitated the reconstruction of consistently time series for the gold- and silver-weight-equivalents of the account systems’ coins. This reconstruction required the consideration of extensive historical sources on monetary history. The reconstruction of the time series are the empirical basis for the translation of nominal price quotations into “gram nobel metal” and for the analysis of the long term development of coin monetary value in the Lower Rhine Area as well.
