A Chicago man went berserk aboard a Los Angeles bound jet airliner Saturday, terrorizing more than 100 passengers 30,000 feet above the ground, police reported. The man, identified as Joseph Newkirk, about 60, raced through the aisle of the plane's first class compartment, waving a switch-blade knife and shouting threats. He was subdued by the pilot of the United Airlines DC-8 Capt. E.J. Kelly of New York and a Camp Pendleton Marine, Pvt. Donald J. Schwalbach, after a 15-minute struggle. Kelly told police here that several women passengers removed their hose for use in binding the hands and feet of the struggling man. The non-stop flight was less than an hour out of Los Angeles when Newkirk, who th DC-8 crew said brought his own liquor aboard with him, jumped from his seat and began shouting".; Supplementary material continues: "MacMillin. 1st add -- Terrorist. Hostesses were unable to calm the man, they said, and one of them ran to the pilot's compartment for help. While Kelly went to her aid, his co-pilot radioed the International Airport tower that police help would be needed when the plane arrived. Officers from Venice Station were waiting on the runway when Capt. Kelly landed the jet. They said Newkirk, who they found 'hogtied' and lying face down in the plane's lounge, fought them all the down the ramp and into the waiting police car. Police said they had not decided on what charge they would jail Newkirk, but that he will be held. They said his knife was handed over to them by Pvt. Schwalbach, who slugged Newkirk and held him down while Kelly bound him. The plane, which had been scheduled to arrive at 3:40 p.m., was 19 minutes late. but the incident apparently had not caused the delay, police said.
