VPRS 5581 Outward Letter Books, Shire Secretary

This series comprises books used to create and retain copies of letters sent by the Shire Secretary. The method involved in this instance is a relatively rare one that did not involve the use of letter presses and tissue paper. Instead the volumes appear to have been a commercially available product. Each volume consisted of number pages comprising two sheets of paper. The secretary would write on the top sheet and a carbon copy would be made on the other. (It is unclear whether the carbon paper was provided in the original volume.) The top sheet was then torn out of the volume and sent to the intended recipient.
