TxDOT Functional Classification

Functional classification is a federally-mandated categorization of roadways based on the level of traffic service and degree of access they provide. Updates to functional classifications are evaluated collaboratively by TPP, TxDOT districts, Metropolitan Planning Organizations and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) staff and can occur on an as-needed basis as roadways are constructed and/or expanded. Technical corrections may also be made on an as needed basis as the GIS representation of our roadways is altered to reflect current conditions on the ground. As such, this layer is updated monthly to reflect the latest data from our Geospatial Roadway Inventory Database (GRID).
