EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION BEHAVIOR ON PRODUCTIVITY OF NATIONAL GOVERNMENT ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS: A CASE OF MURANG'A COUNTY.

The study examined the effects of alcohol consumption behavior on the productivity of National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) in Murang’a County, Kenya. The research focused on four main factors: the frequency of alcohol consumption, drinking with colleagues, type of alcohol consumed, and quantity of alcohol consumed, and how these influence officers’ productivity. The study targeted 456 NGA officers, from which a sample of 183 officers was selected. Data were collected from 175 respondents using questionnaires and interview guides. The research applied a descriptive research design, utilizing simple stratified random sampling. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed using SPSS and content analysis, with results presented through tables, charts, and graphs. The findings indicated that the quantity of alcohol consumed significantly affects productivity. While excessive alcohol consumption negatively impacts work performance, moderate drinking in the company of colleagues may have positive effects, such as improving teamwork and strengthening workplace relationships. The study recommends targeted interventions within the National Government Administrative framework, including the establishment of a comprehensive workplace alcohol policy. Such policies would provide clear guidelines on acceptable drinking behavior, promote a healthier work environment, reduce negative effects of alcohol consumption, and enhance overall employee productivity. The background of the study highlights that productivity is an important indicator of organizational performance and economic health globally. Countries such as the United States, Canada, and Australia improve productivity through digital technologies, performance measurement systems, and service delivery reforms. In South Africa, administrative reforms, digital strategies, and improved leadership have been used to address historical inequalities and enhance public sector productivity.
