Three Young Girls, Kikuyu, Kenya, ca.1911

"Turning from the men and boys, to the girls, we find them similarly adorned. Early as with the boys, the ears are pierced, and the lower lobe slowly dilated, until as you see, they are able to contain large circular blocks of wood and four little fat bits of stick in the upper ear. They wear a frontlet of leather decorated with beads, various in colour, and with little chains dependent therefrom.
