Our goal is to explore the initial nucleation and crystallization processes of volcanic melts. Initially, we will conduct SAXS-WAXS measurements on a set of nanocrystal-bearing glasses (approximately 5-100 nm in diameter) that we have thoroughly characterized through TEM imaging, Raman spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility analyses. This glass characterization is crucial for accurately calibrating our SAXS-WAXS analysis. Subsequently, we will perform high-temperature SAXS-WAXS measurements, utilizing a heating stage near the glass transition temperature, to examine the initiation of crystallization in volcanic melts. Within the scope of our ERC NANOVOLC grant, this data will enable us to significantly enhance the precision of magma transport models, a fundamental factor in understanding and predicting the transition from effusive to explosive volcanic activity. This will be achieved by taking into account the temporal changes in viscosity caused by crystal formation.
