The complete chloroplast genome of Chinese medicine species Bupleurum smithii (Umbelliferae)

The species of Bupleurum smithii (Umbelliferae) is one of the traditional Chinese medicine species. In this study, we first report the complete chloroplast genome of B. smithii. The chloroplast genome was 155,577 bp in length and contained a pair of inverted repeat regions (IR, 26,297 bp) separated by a small single copy (SSC, 17,525 bp) and a large single copy (LSC, 85,458 bp) region. It contains 129 genes, including 84 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. Based on 19 chloroplast genomes data of Umbelliferae, the maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis revealed that B. smithii was sister to B. commelynoideum (Bootstrap = 100%) within Bupleurum. This result will be helpful for the conservation and breeding programs of the species B. smithii.
