Alternating cations intercalation-type chiral-polar hybrid perovskites for efficient self-powered polarization detection

Polarization detection, particularly the simultaneous detection of linearly polarized light (LPL) and circularly polarized light (CPL), is crucial for modern optoelectronic applications. While some chiral hybrid perovskites (CHPs) have demonstrated the capability for both LPL and CPL detection, their anisotropy factors remain relatively low, particularly with LPL values (LPL R/S-PPA)(BA)PbBr4 (2-R/S; R/S-PPA = R/S-1-phenylpropylamine, BA = butylamine), which exhibit pronounced bulk photovoltaic effects (BPVE). Leveraging BPVE, 2-R single-crystal devices achieve efficient self-powered detection of both LPL and CPL under zero bias conditions. The CPL anisotropy factor reaches 0.36, exceeding that of many conventional CHPs. Notably, 2-R demonstrates a linear polarization asymmetry ratio of up to 5.1 under an incident intensity of 567.5 mW cm−2 in self-powered mode, significantly surpassing values reported for CHPs capable of both CPL and LPL detection. This work presents a promising strategy for advancing high-performance CPL and LPL detection in CHPs.
