Iron-oxidizing bacteria, and more specifically Zetaproteobacteria, have been recently linked to stainless steel colonization in estuarine environments. These submissions represent two strains of a novel species of Zetaproteobacteria, Mariprofundus erugo strain P3 and P7. They were isolated from stainless steel coupon deployments in the Pamlico River Estuary, North Carolina and produce helical stalk iron oxides.
