Annual Survey of Industries - 1985 - Sri Lanka

Abstract

The Department of Census and Statistics expanded its series of annual Survey of Industries since 1984 to cover mining and quarrying and electricity, gas and water sectors in addition to Manufacturing sector. Sample size was increased to about 5000 establishments with 5 or more persons engaged, to get meaningful estimates. The frame for this survey was the computer based register of industrial establishments obtained as a by-product of the Census of industry 1983.

Industrial establishments - Defined as the unit that is engaged in the production of a homogeneous group of goods and services, usually at one location but sometimes over a wider area, under a single legal entity, for which separate records are available.

Universe

Larger establishments in the private sector with 25 or more persons engaged , were fully canvassed and a sample was taken from the other categories.

A modified questionnaire was prepared taking into consideration UN recommendations, as well as the manner in which some industrial establishments maintained their business records (source Annual Survey of Industries 1985 - preliminary Report by dept of Census and Statistics).

Response rate

The response rate for the survey was around 68% as compared to the somewhat better response rate of 73% secured at the 1984 survey.
