VPRS 10478 Y.M.C.A Photographic Albums of World War 1 Artwork and Images

This series consists of two albums which contain photographic prints mainly of artwork and a handful of photographic images depicting YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) Australia's involvement in World War 1. The YMCA was involved in caring for Australian troops through the provision of recreational and postal services and "home" comforts.Most of the photographic prints in these albums are of drawings attributed to W.[William] Cecil Dunford, YMCA Special War Artist attached to the Publicity and Historical Records Section of the AIF. His drawings mostly depict war locations, YMCA facilities on the front or behind the lines and the recreational activities of Australian troops. The photographic images depict the Australian YMCA HQ in London and members of the London staff.It is unclear when this series was received by PROV. It is thought that these albums had been originally presented by the YMCA to either a Victorian Government Agency or official, however, these contain no annotations or markings to enable an accurate identification to be made. Thus, in the absence of such data preventing attribution to a Victorian agency, YMCA Australia has been cited as both the creating and responsible agency for this series.
