Two Rhodopirellula strains from the biofilm surface of Fucus spiralis were isolated, which growed efficiently on two chemically distinct fucoidan structures. Genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics data supports that fucoidan processing is conducted using a divergent set of fucanolytic enzymes, mainly organized in different PULs.
