We sequenced 11 isolates recovered from aquatic, environmental habitats to investigate the genetic divergence of Enterococcus faecalis from non-clinical sources. Comparative bioinformatic analyses were employed in search of discrete gene signatures that facilitate habitat specialization and thus differentiate isolates of environmental and clinical origin. Such variable genes represent promising biomarkers for improving public health surveillance through a more robust discrimination of fecal contaminants from autochthonous, close relatives.
