This is a well-known fact that active Pi (Phosphorus in orthophosphate forms as H2HPO4- and HPO42-) is very limited in the acidic soil of southern China forestlands. Chinese fir is one of the most important commercial timber and afforestation species in southern China, but the low level Pi and continuous replanting on the same sites had become an important factor to restrict the long-term productivity of Chinese fir plantation. In this study, we conduct a comparative study on response genes and pathways to Pi-deficiency stress of a Pi-tolerant clone and a Pi-sensitive clone, revealing the effect of Pi-deficiency stress on morphological changes and molecular event in Chinese fir clones. The outcome gave us new insights the molecular mechanisms of Pi-efficient utilization in Chinese fir.
