Balin was one of the thirteen dwarves who accompanied Thorin Oakenshield in his quest to regain the Lonely Mountain from Smaug the dragon. He was the second oldest of the thirteen dwarves and was considered the deputy leader of the group. Balin was one of Thorin’s closest advisors.
