The overall objective of this project is to isolate bacterial strains from the sediment of a freshwater stream impacted by acid mine drainage. It is anticipated that bacteria from extreme environments may provide a rich resource to discover potentially novel secondary metabolites. The initial goal of this study is to annotate the genome of novel species to search for gene clusters coding for secondary metabolites. Our second goal is to test for antimicrobial product action against relevant bacteria and fungal species. Should we find antimicrobial action, we will mutagenize the appropriate gene locus to establish causation.
