Pseudomonas putida U. Genome sequencing and assembly. Pseudomonas putida strain:U

Strain U from Pseudomonas putida was primarily isolated by S. Dagley and D.T. Gibson in 1965 from the mud of a stream in Urbana (Illinois). This microorganism has been deposited in the Coleccion Espanola de Cultivos Tipo (CECT4848). Studies about this bacterium were pionering for the bacterial phenylacetate catabolic pathway. Description of this pathway was made simultaneously in this strain and in Escherichia coli W, in a collaborative work between the Prof. Jose M. Luengo's Lab (Dept. Biologia Molecular, Universidad de Leon, Spain) and Jose Luis Garcia's Lab (CIB/CSIC, Spain). Moreover, using P. putida U, different pathways for catabolism of aromatic compounds, biogenic amines, lipids and other compounds have been described. In addition, studies about polyhydroxyalkanoate production, characterizing the polymerizing/depolymerizing machinery, as well as the involvement of beta-oxidative genes in the process have been performed.In base to these studies, different biotechnological applications using the genes and proteins from this strain have been developed.Although close related to Pseudomonas putida strains KT2440 and S16, P. putida U shows phenotypical differencies that are evidenced at genome level.
