Fighting Lung Cancer with Computer Power: Predicting Which Treatments Will Work
Project Background:
Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious types of cancer. It affects the lungs, the organs we use to breathe. This disease affects hundreds of thousands of people worldwide every year, making finding better treatments a very important goal.
What is Immunotherapy?
Our bodies have a natural defense system called the immune system, which fights off germs and sickness. Sometimes, cancer cells can "hide" from this system. Immunotherapy is a special type of cancer treatment that does not use chemotherapy. Instead, it uses medicines that help the patient's own immune system recognize and attack cancer cells, just like it would attack a virus. It's like giving the immune system a pair of "glasses" to see the hidden cancer cells. However, this treatment does not work for everyone, and we need to find a way to predict who will benefit from it.
Research Plan:
I want to find a way to tell which patients with Lung Cancer will respond well to immunotherapy before they start treatment. To do this, I will use two advanced tools:
RNA Sequencing (RNA-Seq): This is like a super-powered microscope that lets us see exactly what is happening inside a cancer cell. All living cells have instructions inside them called genes. RNA sequencing allows us to read a very detailed list of all the genes that are active in a tumor. This activity list can tell us a lot about the cancer, including whether the immune system is likely to see it and attack it.
Artificial Intelligence (AI): You might know AI from smart assistants or self-driving cars. In research, I will use AI as a smart computer program. I will teach this AI program to find hidden patterns in the large amount of gene activity data (from the RNA sequencing) from previous patients. I will show it data from patients who responded to immunotherapy and patients who did not. The AI will learn from these examples to spot the signs of a tumor that can be defeated by the immune system.
Why is this Research Needed?
Right now, doctors don't have a reliable test to know which Lung Cancer patients will be helped by immunotherapy. This means some patients go through treatment without getting the benefit, while others might miss out on a different treatment that could work better for them. My research aims to create a smart tool that can make this prediction. This would help doctors choose the best, most personalized treatment for each patient right from the start, saving precious time and improving their chances of survival.
