Raw data recordings for the Askja Magnetometry Experiment (NSF-EAR 2333178/2333180)

This repository contains the raw data files recovered from the six 3-component fluxgate magnetometers that were deployed in and around Askja volcano, Iceland, between August 2023 and August 2025. A tool for processing these datafiles into complete miniSEED records stored in an SDS-formatted archive is available in the project GitHub repository.

The two directories containing the data files have been losslessly compressed using the 7zip utility (not included by default with any OS, but it is free and open-source) using the command:

7z a -t7z -m0=lzma2 -mx=9 -ms=on 2024.tar.7z 2024.tar

Please be aware that when reinflated the raw directories occupy approximately 55 GB. Once converted to miniSEED the final archive is around 15 GB.

`2024/`: this directory contains data recovered during the field visit in July 2024, covering the period of August 2023 to July 2024. The sites were checked and left to record for another year.

`2025/`: this directory contains data recovered during the field visit in August 2025, covering the period of July 2024 to August 2025. The sites were decommissioned during this visit.

To decompress:

Note: there is some overlap between the files in the two subdirectories, as some data files from 2023–2024 were left on the SD cards. There are also some small files containing data from pre-deployment tests. These have been retained for the sake of completeness, but the archiving tools provided in the separate project GitHub repository handle these issues.

A quality-controlled miniSEED archive of these data can be accessed from the EarthScope Data Management Center using the FDSN web services tools.
