AWW Citizen Generated Water Quality Data (2026Q2)

AWW certified monitors are trained to collect water samples and conduct bacteriological and / or water chemistry monitoring. Water monitoring is often conducted monthly, but it can vary depending on monitoring group objectives. At every monitoring event, monitors must record on a data form date and time the sample was collected, the specific AWW Site Code, the name of the watershed, waterbody, county and state where the monitoring site is located. Monitors must also record a description as accurate as possible of the monitoring site, general waterbody level conditions, and if it has tidal influence are required. Additional observations conducted during the water monitoring and comments concerning the monitoring results can be written at the bottom of the data form. Bacteriological monitoring data forms also include measurements of air and water temperature, sample volume, initial incubation time of samples and incubation temperature, and the expiration date of the culturing media. After 20-24 hours, monitors record the number of E. coli and other coliform colonies counted on each of three replicates, on the data reporting form along with the incubation period. Water Chemistry Monitoring data forms include measurements of air and water temperature, pH, total alkalinity, total hardness, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen. Options for Secchi depth and salinity measurements may appear when appropriate.
