Test of a method for viral attenuation by engineering a harmless bacteriophage genome to encode its RNA polymerase gene in two fragments. The genome was created, and the intact phage was adapted in culture to detect any evolutionary changes in level of attenuation. Genome sequencing was used to study the molecular bases of laboratory evolution.
