The Central Roads Board, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744). This agency became responsible for local government under the Local Government Act 1863 which devolved a great deal of the responsibility for the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges to municipalities.This series is concerned with the process for central auditing of shire accounts. For each year. For each year it contains extracts from the Government Gazette listing the appointment of shire auditors appointment, copies of the letters of appointment sent to the auditor and the municipality and lists of shires with the amounts paid to them in each year in subsidies and grants and lists of shires with endowments and all other payments.
