Description The file dataRaemakers.zip
contains five comma-separated ASCII text files containing data from Raemakers
et al. (2001) used to illustrate co-correspondence analysis in the subsection
Carabid beetles and vegetation in Dutch roadside verges. The data form
a subset of 30 roadside verges (sites). The (abbreviated) names for columns
(variables) in each file are given in the first line of each file, separated
by commas. Each row starts with the site name.
The file beetles.txt
contains counts of all 91 carabid beetles in the 30 sites. The data are ln(y + 1)-transformed
before the analysis in the paper.
The file plants.txt
contains the abundances of 173 plant species on the 1-9 van der Maarel scale
in the 30 sites.
The file syntax_units.txt
contains the eight syntaxonomic units of the 30 sites in dummy coding (indicator
coding).
The file environment.txt
contains 13 variables representing the soil and microclimate. The variables
pH, Hour_Sun, and Warmth35 are analyzed untransformed.
All other environmental variables are ln-transformed, except for the variable
%sandiness which is logit transformed: y = log(( x + 1)/(101 – x)).
Full names of environmental variables:
Mmoisture = Gravimetric
moisture content in the first half of March.
ZMoisture = Gravimetric moisture content in summer.
%Org = Gravimetric organic matter (with respect to total
dry soil including particles >2 mm).
%Sandiness = Sand content (particles >65um; including gravel
and small stones) with respect to the total dry soil mass (including particles
>2 mm).
pH = pH in CaCl2
NO3 = NO3-N in kg/ha (CaCl2 extraction)
NH4 = NH4-N in kg/ha (CaCl2 extraction)
Nmin = N-mineral (NO3-N + NH4-N) in kg/ha
P = soluble P in kg/ha (CaCl2 extraction)
K = soluble K in kg/ha (CaCl2 extraction)
Nitr = nitrification degree = NO3-N / (NO3-N + NH4-N)
Hour Sun = hours of sunshine in June plus July as estimated
from slope and exposure, and weather data
Warmth35 = indication of warmth as estimated from slope and
exposure, assuming southwest exposed locations are warmer than southeast exposed
ones
The file veg_structure.txt
contains nine variables characterizing the vegetation structure. These nine
variables are all log transformed in the analyses of the paper. Full names of
vegetation structure variables:
Hmax = maximum
of measured average vegetation heights
Havg = average of the 5× measured average vegetation
heights
Hcv = coefficient of variation of the five mean-vegetation
height measurements
DurZero = Havg/Hmax
SCrMax = roughness = maximum coefficient of variation
in the individual height measurements
MaxH = maximum height of the individual plants
Bio = rough measure of biomass of peak standing crop, measured
from the total (absolute, not relative) covered vertical surface area
Hp5_50 = percentage of the vegetation height (with exceedings
threshold 5%) below which 50% of the biomass occurs
Vul5 = convexity of the graph of vegetation density against
vegetation height (with exceedings threshold 5%)
The first five variables are from height
measurements with the ring method (5× per year). The last four variables
are from vertical structure photographs (on moment of Peak Standing Crop).
