X-ray properties of Hyper Luminous Infrared Galaxies

Hyper Luminous IR Galaxies (HLIRG) exhibit extremely high star formation rates,and most of them seem to also harbour AGN. They are therefore uniquelaboratories to investigate the relationship between star formation andsupermassive black hole growth. We propose to use the high sensitivity ofXMMNewton in the hard Xray band to observe an unbiased sample of HLIRG,extensively studied in the FIR/submm. The combination of data in these twopenetrating spectral ranges will address questions such as the AGN and starburstcontributions to their bolometric emission, the distribution of the star formingmaterial, and its relationship to the material feeding the black hole andobscuring the nuclear emission. truncated!, Please see actual data for full text [truncated!, Please see actual data for full text]
