The Parenthood topic measures an economy’s laws governing paid leave for parents, the allocation of responsibility between the country’s government and employers for payment of maternity benefits, and protections against dismissal on the basis of pregnancy. It also examines the ease of application to receive maternity leave benefits, incentives for fathers to take leave, and availability of sex-disaggregated data on unpaid care and domestic work, as well as expert perceptions on the extent to which laws on women’s work during and after pregnancy are enforced in practice.
