To contribute to the conservation of endangered animals, the utilization of model systems is critical to analyze their function of gut microbiota. in this study, we aimed to determine how the giant panda microbiota survives in and colonizes germ-free mice. We used horse microbiota as a control to investigate whether the horse microbiota shows a similar establishment in germ-free mice as the giant panda microbiota, and to characterize the diversity and composition of the gut microbiota of germ-free mice colonized with two distinct fecal communities from horse and giant panda as well as blood metabolic changes of these germ-free mice afterfecal microbial transplantation .
