It is highly possible that praR of Azorhizobium caulinodans encodes a transcriptional factor. Thus, to explore what kinds of gene expression are related to the PraR protein, the expression of genes in the praR mutant of A. caulinodans grown under the NH4+-sufficient and aerobic conditions was compared by microarray analysis to those in the wild type strain. The expression levels of a gene cluster (AZC_3781 to AZC_3787) were substantially higher in the praR mutant than the wild type strain (WAD, 1.09 to 2.60). We designated this gene cluster as the ?greb locus?h because it contained four genes (AZC_3781 to AZC_3783, and AZC_3786) similar to the rebA, rebB, and/or rebD genes of Caedibacter taeniospiralis. The expression levels of two genes (AZC_3780 and AZC_3788) flanking the reb locus were not different between Anx7 and ORS571 (WAD, 0.14 and 0.29, respectively).
