Altered gut virome in chronic kidney disease: the role of gut viruses in the gut-kidney axis

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is closely associated with alterations in gut bacterial composition. However, little is known about the role of the gut virome in CKD development. Here, using metagenomic sequencing of fecal samples of 30 CKD patients and 20 healthy subjects, we found contraction of the gut virome diversity, separation of virome community with increased community difference, shifting towards a lower proportion of core viruses in CKD patients.
