TAMFT-3A & 3B2 homeologs are associated with wheat (Triticum aestivum) preharvest sprouting.

Investigate the homeologs of the Mother of Flowering Time (MFT) gene in a double haploid population of winter wheat cultivar Loma (PI680576) and Warhorse (PI670157) for their effect on preharvest sprouting (PHS). Loma and Warhorse have different alleles of MFT on the A genome and the 2nd copy on the B genome, or B2. DHL population was grown in the field at the Post Farm in Bozeman Montana, and PHS was evaluated in misting chambers. RNA was extracted from DHL population seeds for RNA Seq evaluation of expression. PHS effects wheat negatively when rains occur after grain maturity, before harvest. Sprouted wheat loses its agronomic value and is often rejected at grain elevators. This study seeks to characterize genes that effect PHS and develop germplasm that is resistant to the phenomenon.
