Dataset of Sugar Maple Trees Using Transects in Danby Woodlot

The data set on Sugar Maple Tree species was collected on September 22nd at the Danby Woodlot located at York University Campus at approximately 3:30-4:20 with laboratory partners Fenil, Tonia & Michael. The temperature was 21˚C with sunny conditions and a light breeze. The objective of this laboratory exercise was to familiarize Biol2050 students with sampling techniques such as the use of transects and quadrats in addition to gaining experience in gathering field data. There are four data sets in total. I chose to execute Woodlot data set #4. A linear transect of 30m was created using transect measuring tape. 10 adult Sugar Maple Trees were randomly selected along the transect. An adult tree is considered a tree twice my height or more (129+ inches). The diameter at breast height was measured in inches using the transect measuring tape. The canopy cover was also estimated using the method described in the meta-data. For each of the 10 adult Sugar Maple Trees found, the distance to the closest Sugar Maple sapling was recorded in inches. Saplings must be less than twice my height (less than 129+ inches). The diameter of the 10 Sugar Maple sapling was recorded in inches. 20 trees were surveyed in total ( 10 adult Sugar Maple trees & 10 Sugar Maple saplings).
