This project aims to elucidate the synthesis mechanism of allomelanin nanoparticles (NPs) by means of Ultra Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (USAXS). The formation of synthetic allomelanin NPs takes place in aqueous media through an oxidative polymerization process.¹ Nevertheless, the structural features and the assembly pathway of allomelanin remain largely unknown. Monitoring the reaction in situ with USAXS will allow us to follow nanoparticle formation from the very early stages (Guinier region), providing fundamental insight into their nucleation and structural organization. A deeper understanding of the onset of allomelanin polymerization could play a crucial role in advancing the design and synthesis of this promising new material.
