This is the first report describing identification of an extensively drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolate with Bedaquiline, Linezolid and Clofazimine resistance from Uganda through Whole-genome analysis. This finding has important implications for national public health, because the widely distributed Xpert MTB/RIF platform can detect only rifampicin resistance. Our study strongly highlights the importance of implementing XDR-TB rapid low-cost point-of-care diagnostics or portable sequencing technologies for comprehensive detection of resistance to anti-tuberculous drugs such as Oxford Nanopore and PacBio within TB control programs in high TB and TB/HIV burden countries.
