The CD contains information pertaining to the JGOFS-India
programme. This programme was sponsored by the Department of Ocean
Development, New Dehli and was a multidisciplinary approach jointly
conducted by four national agencies: National Institute of
Oceanography (NIO), Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), National
Chemical Laboratory (NCL) and Centre for Mathematical Modelling and
Computer Simulation (C-MMACS). The field campaign in the eastern
Arabian Sea was conducted between 1992-97 in 7 cruises with ORV Sagar
Kanya as the platform.
The large number of parameters simultaneously measured over seasons
covering the west coast of India and central Arabian Sea brought in
several new insights such as rates of air-sea flux of CO2. Carbon
fixation rates resulting from winter cooling and open ocean upwelling
as well as the coupling of physics with chemistry and biology. The raw
and processed data along with other published information incorporated
in this CD will hopefully be used by scientist all over the world to
resolve the mysteries of the Arabian Sea-a unique tropical ocean basin.
