A sex of birds is genetically determined. However, a sex-determining factor derived from the W chromosome is unknown. To identify the W-linked non-coding RNAs involved in female-sex (ovary) - detemining, we compared the mRNA- and smRNA-seq data obtained embryonic gonads of Japanese quail between sexes and developmental stages.
