The Composer Photograph: Sounding, Scoring, and Amplifying Overtones for Double Bass Performance

Harmonic technique is a key element of contemporary double bass performance practice. However, traditional music notation systems often represent these sounds in ways that are spatially counterintuitive and difficult to read. This thesis examines new methods for engaging with overtones on the double bass in improvisational performance, combining innovative approaches to notation, amplification, and extended performance techniques. Across four original double-bass performances, the concept of the composer photograph is used as a creative framework to visually inspire and shape new sonic approaches.
