Processed Data, Variable Information, and Questionnaire for the Study: 'Mixing Farm and Farmer Policy-Relevant Typologies to Tailor Agri-Environmental Schemes

Despite decades of experience, Agri-Environmental Scheme adoption remains low, limiting the Common Agricultural Policy’s effectiveness in achieving environmental goals. A key limitation is the ‘one size fits all’ design approach, which overlooks behavioural, structural, and biophysical heterogeneity within agricultural systems. This study adds to the existing literature by exploring the Danish agricultural context to (i) develop policy-relevant typologies combining farmers’ value orientations, household, environmental, and structural variables, and (ii) leverage this knowledge to improve the design of tailored schemes. Using data from an adapted Environmental-Portrait Value Questionnaire and the Farm Accountancy Data Network, we identify six farm and four farmer types, revealing moderate associations between them. We propose two tailoring strategies: (i) aligning payment structures and mitigation measures with value orientations and constraints, and (ii) incorporating peer influence and spatial targeting. Furthermore, we argue for a policy mix combining incentives, behavioural tools, regulation, and peer-to-peer learning. Finally, we suggest how these typologies can inform Agent-Based Models for ex-ante policy assessments.
