Description Aggregated data for the article The concept of place and its oral tradition in Western Norway. A study of pupils' toponym descriptions from 1932 Content A data set compising 424 toponyms and their descriptions as recorded by middle-schoolers from the former Norwegian county of Sogn og Fjordane in 1932. All the toponyms are extracted from an unpublished archive known as skulebarninnsamlinga av stadnamn (‘the pupils’ toponym collection’) or skulebarnsoppskriftene av stadnamn (‘the pupils’ lists of toponyms’), currently deposited at the Norwegian Language Collections (Språksamlingane) at the University of Bergen. Language Norwegian Format and layout One (1) Excel-file comprising three (3) spreadsheets, one for each traditional district in Sogn og Fjordane (Sogn, Sunnfjord, Norfjord). In each spreadsheet, one (1) line corresponds to one (1) toponym: Sogn - 182 toponyms Sunnfjord - 91 toponyms Nordfjord - 151 toponyms Each spreadsheet comprises seven coloums with detailed information about each toponym. Currently, the data set is alphabetized by municipality (coloumn C). Coloumns A-B: information about the toponym (verbatim transcriptions from the pupils' toponym collection) A) Form = the toponym itself as documented by the informant in 1932 B) Skildring = the description of the toponym as recorded by the informant in 1932 Coloumns C-F: information about the informant's homeplace in 1932 (modern, normalized spelling) C) Herad 1932 (ev. bygd) = name of the municipality (and possibly the hamlet) D) Gard 1932 = name of the farm E) Gardsnr. = main cadastral unit number (gardsnummer) F) Bruksnr. = property unit number(s) (bruksnummer) Coloumn G Samsvar i andre arkiv (FiV, SSR) el. plassering: supplementary sources and/or additional information (if applicable). One of the following: A hyperlink to a matching entry in a collection of place-names from 1985 by Vestland County Council Archives (Fylkesarkivet i Vestland, abbreviated as FiV), which is fully digitized and provides a localization of the toponym as well. If no matching entry is found in the FiV's 1985 archive, a corresponding present-day toponym from the National Place Name Register is provided (Sentralt stadnamnregister, abbreviated as SSR).
