This dataset features metabarcoding data that were derived from the feces of the New Mexico meadow jumping mouse (Zapus hudsonius luteus). Z. h. luteus is an Endangered species in the United States. We generated this dataset because acquiring feeding information for this animal is challenging using direct observation and microscopy. These data were captured using an Illumina MiSeq V3 600 cycle kit and were sequenced among five MiSeq runs. Samples include any non-template controls that amplified with our libraries. Samples also include multiple PCR replicates of plant mock communities. It also includes several PCR replicates of DNA extracted from the bait we used during live-trapping. Amplified among two multiplex PCR reactions, each sample in the dataset features data from five markers: ITS2 and rbcL (for plants), COI (for arthropods), ITS2 (for fungi), and cytochrome B (for rodents). Cytochrome B was used to determine if a fecal sample could have been mislabeled as Z. h. luteus or was contaminated with the DNA of other small mammals in the trapping locality.
