From Face to Skull: Physiognomic Code and Bodily Semiotics of 1937 in Yury Dombrovsky's Dilogy — Corpus Card Index

This dataset accompanies the article “От лица к черепу: физиогномический код и телесная семиотика 1937 года в дилогии Ю.О. Домбровского”. It contains a cleaned analytical card index for studying physiognomic code and bodily semiotics in Yury Dombrovsky’s dilogy “The Keeper of Antiquities” and “The Faculty of Useless Knowledge”. The main workbook preserves all source contexts extracted from the National Corpus of the Russian Language by the semantic class “Body parts” and documents the cleaning and classification decisions. The data distinguish the main corpus of living characters’ bodily descriptions from comparative bodily code, borderline cases, excluded cases, and appendix material. The coding scheme includes lemma, normalized lexeme, word form, body zone, function of the bodily sign, analytical status, type of carrier, ontological status of the body, relation to physiognomy, semiotic function, inclusion in quantitative analysis, suitability for close reading, justification of the decision, named characters, left/right/full context, RNC source identifier, document word count, and RNC title. A supplementary frequency file provides frequency and IPM statistics for body-part lexemes. The package includes the original XLSX files, preservation-friendly CSV exports, a data dictionary, a methodology note, a manifest with SHA-256 checksums, citation metadata, and Zenodo-ready metadata.
