“Operating theatre, replaced about 1949 by the new theatre.” Interior view of an operating room with large windows, three staff in masks and gowns stand behind an adjustable operating table. New wards, dispensary and theatre were built in 1938 to replace the original hospital building of 1926. This theatre was replaced in 1949-50 when a new set of buildings were constructed on a quadrangle with a theatre, out-patients building and children’s ward on each side. ❧ The image is from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the period from 1947-1961 at the Chogoria mission which was established near Mt Kenya, in 1922, and run by Dr Irvine.
