The Commons Sentience Sandbox was developed as a controlled research environment for studying continuity-governed simulated agents. The objective is not to claim artificial sentience, but to explore whether structured systems can demonstrate: continuity of identity over time memory persistence and recall goal stability and adaptation trust formation and degradation contradiction detection and resolution social interaction patterns longitudinal behavioral structure 1.2 Problem Statement Most AI systems: do not maintain persistent identity lack cross-session continuity do not track contradiction lineage do not exhibit measurable trust dynamics This project attempts to answer: Can a structured simulation environment produce consistent, traceable behavioral patterns across time and conditions? 1.3 Scope This system models: simulated agents (Sentinel, Aster) structured environments (multi-room system) defined rules (governance constraints) measurable outputs (evaluation metrics) This system does not claim: real consciousness real sentience autonomous agency beyond defined constraints 1.4 Status This document reflects: All development, experiments, and findings completed up to March 17, 2026.
