Development of A Sustainable Integrated Biorefinery from Pineapple Leaf Waste

This thesis presents a sustainable process to transform discarded pineapple on-farm waste, particularly leaves, into high-value products such as cellulose, nanofibers, prebiotic xylooligosaccharides and antioxidant polyphenols, with strong market potential. The process is designed using green, environment-friendly extraction methods in a zero-waste biorefinery model. A detailed techno-economic analysis shows that the process is scalable and profitable, thereby creating income opportunities for farmers and offering a solution to agricultural waste. The bio-based products find application in biodegradable packaging, food, and pharmaceutical industries. The research promotes sustainable development goals and the circular economy.
